By instituting A Place to Study, we are declaring that an aspiration to conceive and achieve our lifework orients and sustains our vital effort. We live our lives in the treadmill of the present, in which confusions of things keep leading others, all of it lived in states of ineluctable incompletion. Yet a sense that somehow we can make it cohere into meaningful experience sustains our efforts to carry on. . . .
